40 Countries competed in this edition, which featured two new entries: Lebanon and the youngest European Nation, Montenegro, that on 21st May became an independent Country through a Referendum. More than 150 journalists, disc jockeys, music producers and radio speakers from all over the world voted the songs and chose Basshunter's "Boten Anna" as the best dance track of the year.
“Boten Anna” was released in the Spring of 2006 and soon turned out to be a smash hit in many European Countries. It spent two weeks at the top of the Swedish, Danish and Dutch Charts and also entered the Norwegian and Finnish top 40. "Boten Anna" became the first song entirely in Swedish to conquer the European music market. It was also chosen as the official hymn of the Russ festivities, celebrated during the first weeks of May by the Norwegian students who graduated. The song talks about a female IRC user mistaken by the vocalist for an IRC bot.
Just like the year before, Italy placed second with "Survival", the come-back single of the popular duo Prezioso feat. Marvin, Internationally known for their hit "Tell Me Why".
Two songs shared the third step of the podium: the dance version of the Austrian smash hit "Ich Lebe", originally sung by Christina Stürmer, and "Je Cherche Encore", written and produced by Finnish project VPM.
Just one point behind was the Czech group Verona with the track "Girotondo", while the successful dance project Cascada placed sixth with "Love Again", taken from their debut album "Everytime we touch".
